ARTICLE ANALYSIS:ECONOMIC RIGHTS OF WOMEN IN ISLAM

Bismillah..hello~just wanna share my assignment for UI(understanding Islam)..This subject actually a university requirement.. :)Hope u enjoy reading ^_^

Based on the article I had analyzed which wrote by Dr. Zakir Naik, it was  an overview of women’s economic rights in Islam. Islam recognized rights of adult women before the West did. A woman in Islam can own her property without a control or approval of anyone. These rights undergo no change when she gets married, and she retains her full rights in buying, selling, and mortgage, as well as in the signing of contracts for rent, enterprise, etc.

In Islam, women can work in any field she like according to sharia limit and getting an equal pay if she does the same job as men.  Verse 4:32 in Quran emphasizes the equality of men and women in the economic growth of a society. “Men shall have a benefit from what they earn, and women shall have a benefit from what they earn. (4:32)”. This is an option of flexibility in Islam toward women.

If she married she should take her husband’s permission if she want to work. Women should not work that exhibiting her beauty or body. We can look the justice in Islam toward women as most jobs forbidden to women are also forbidden to men. Actually, Islamic society really need women to work as professionals to fulfill the fardhu kifayah(collective obligatory). Therefore, the rights and vanity of women will be protected.

Women have no financial obligations in Islam. No one can force her to work and if she want to work it fully in her own free will. It is the duty  of the man in the family take care of women in the family and even after she married, the duty fall on her husband or son. She entitles full support in any condition. The Quran states: "Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend of their wealth (for the support of women)." (4:34)

A woman is also entitled to a marital gift(Mehr) during marriage from the husband. The dowry is specially own by her and she can do it anything lawful with it. Its clearly stated in Surah Nisa verse 34 that a man must give dowry to her wife. But a woman do not have to give dowry to her husband and the husband has no right to ask for dowry from woman. This subject of dowry in Islam is just opposite of the Hindu culture did where the man can demand dowry from the woman’s family according to his economic condition.

The woman is entitled also to full financial support during marriage and during the waiting period in case of divorce or widowhood. If she has any child she is entitled to child support from the child’s father even she is rich.  In the laws of inheritance, which afford the male, in most cases, twice the inheritance of a female, but no offense as according what I had elaborated before show women have less responsibilities.

It can be concluded that a woman are fully in the care of adult male in every phase of her life. In any condition there are certain financial guaranties for her.King Hussein 1 said  “I am totally against the idea that a Muslim woman should not have the same opportunities as a Muslim man to learn, to open up, to work, help shape the future. To close Islam down to a sexist approach is totally intolerable and ridiculous. It's not Islam."   Women in Islam have the rights in economy in line with the sharia. I ended this article analysis with a verse from surah Taubah [9:71] “..the Believers, men and women, are protectors one of another”.
